“I’m interested in the moment when an image stops being what it originally was. By combining fragments, changing their scale or placing them in unexpected situations, I try to create a new reality that feels both familiar and slightly unsettling.”
Born in Couvet in 1994, Rosalie Evard grew up in Valangin and Neuchâtel. After completing her secondary education with a focus on visual arts at Lycée Numa-Droz, she graduated from the Académie de Meuron in 2017. She subsequently studied at the École Jean-Sablé in Versailles from 2017 to 2018, where she trained in trompe-l’œil and decorative painting for theatre and cinema. She currently works between her photography studio in Valangin and her painting studio in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Portraiture occupies a central place in Evard’s practice. Her paintings begin with an intuitive process of collecting and assembling images: fragments of bodies, fashion imagery, photographs of people encountered in everyday life, furniture, vegetation, decorative motifs and elements drawn from her own photographic archive. These sources are digitally manipulated and combined before becoming the basis for her paintings.
Through this process of fragmentation and recomposition, Evard moves away from straightforward representation. Bodies, objects and environments are displaced, enlarged or brought together in unexpected ways, creating scenes in which the familiar becomes strange. Her compositions draw freely from fashion photography, classical portraiture, popular imagery and everyday visual culture, moving between humour, seduction, absurdity and unease.
Evard’s work has been presented in Switzerland in exhibitions including at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds and Galerie Lange + Pult. Her practice has also developed through artist residencies, including a residency in Berlin in 2024 and with Art Valais in 2025.
