Robert Schaberl explores colour as a constantly shifting experience, creating luminous works that transform according to light, movement and point of view.
Robert Schaberl (b. 1961, Austria) is an Austrian contemporary artist known for his ongoing exploration of colour, light and perception. Since the 1990s, his practice has centred on his Zentralformen (Central Forms), a distinctive body of circular paintings built through meticulously applied layers of pigment.
Using interference and pearlescent pigments, Schaberl creates surfaces whose colours shift according to the viewer’s position and changing light conditions. The apparent simplicity of the circle becomes the basis for a complex perceptual experience: colour appears to expand, recede and transform across the surface.
His work investigates the relationship between painting, space and perception, inviting the viewer to experience colour not as a fixed property but as something continually changing.
